Company pledges more than $50,000 to area events, charities

Known for its stellar patient care, American Family Care, the second largest privately owned urgent care operator in the country, is reaching out beyond its clinics’ doors to extend its signature brand of care to two nonprofit community organizations and the PGA’s Champions Tour. The urgent care chain recently signed on to sponsor events planned by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and Regions Financial Corporation and the PGA Tour, all taking place in Birmingham, Ala., AFC’s home base. “As a company, we always look forward to events like these. Sponsoring these events is a great way for us to show our support and give back to the same community that relies on us for its urgent care needs,” says Dr. Bruce Irwin, founder of American Family Care. Great Strides, the signature fundraising event for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, will hold a walk May 17 at Veterans Park in Birmingham. AFC has added its name to the sponsor list with a $10,000 donation to the event. Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic disease that affects the lungs and digestive systems of about 30,000 people, including children. Each year, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society holds its Light the Night walks to raise money to fund research to find cures and provide services and support for patients and families fighting blood cancer. AFC has signed on as a $10,000 sponsor for the October event in Birmingham. More than 2,500 people attended last year’s Light the Night walk, with more expected at this year’s event. AFC has also signed on to be the official medical sponsor for the Champions Tour's Regions Tradition at Shoal Creek Club in Birmingham on May 14-18. The company’s $35,000 donation helps bring this signature event to the Birmingham community, a $25 million economic boost for the greater Birmingham area. “The Birmingham community looks forward to the golf tournament every year, and this year’s festivities will be the best yet,” Irwin says. “We’re also excited to be a part of the fundraising events for great causes like the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. They do so much for others, and we’re thrilled to do our part, too.”
